Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Alexander

🏉 Ron Barassi

Ron Barassi was born in Castlemaine and grew up at Guildford, attending Guildford Primary School and Castlemaine Technical School. His later football life encompassed premiership playing, captaincy, coaching and a highly visible role as an ambassador for the game. The regional connection continued after those achievements: he returned to Guildford in 2016 for the presentation of a bronze bust at John Powell Reserve. Local recollections emphasised his affection for the district. His biography therefore includes a continuing relationship with the community of his childhood, rather than a birthplace mentioned once and left behind.

⚒️ Ernest and Bertha Leviny

Hungarian silversmith and jeweller Ernest Leviny came to the Castlemaine goldfields and later bought the house that became Buda. He and Bertha raised a large family there, with successive generations shaping its rooms, collections and gardens. The home’s name recalled Budapest, carrying a personal memory into the Victorian goldfields. Their local story links skilled craft, migration and a long family occupation rather than a brief speculative visit. The surviving house preserves the objects and surroundings of that life, giving Castlemaine an unusually intimate record of a creative household.

🎨 The Leviny daughters

The Leviny daughters helped turn Buda into a distinctive artistic household, making decorative work for both house and garden. Their contribution survives in an intact collection associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, alongside furnishings and personal belongings. The youngest daughter, Hilda, left the property to the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum in 1981, preserving the family setting for public access. Their story deserves space beside their father’s silversmithing career: much of Buda’s character reflects the creative decisions and sustained work of women who continued living and making there.
